The first people trained at Ground Zero were friends from church. They were the first to acknowledge their situation and simply trust that Crossfit methods would work. Crossfit workouts are not only physically demanding, but also emotionally assaulting. There is a distinct moment when you simply want to quit and tap out. However, the Hembree’s would never quit. Even after surprise sessions with “Puckie”, the whole family would return with joy and conviction. The girls would rejoice over 1RM deadlifts, and the men over their clean and jerks. Actually, they rejoiced over EVERYTHING. Every strength gain, skill enhancement, ROM improvement was celebrated. We rejoice to see the people we love grow stronger and function better. The month preceding their move from Norman, the Hembrees could not train at the garage gym. That did not stop them. At their going away party, Keanan demonstrated the addition of handstand pushups to his arsenal, and Katina executed three, solid, no-kiddin’ pushups. We where JAZZED!
What does “Hembree” mean? “Hembree” will always mean “Lionhearted” at Ground Zero and “Lionhearted” is accurate. This family is a clan lead by the “Lion of Judah” and it was evident in their unwillingness to tap out, and their demonstrative love for one another. It was evident as one would cheer for the clan and as the clan would cheer for the one. It was evident in their willingness to suffer through and to gain the prize as a clan.
In honor of the Hembrees and the short, but special time we had training together, Ground Zero posts a workout that requires no equipment beyond household items that could be readily available. Crossfit is scalable and modifiable.
“No equipment” is no excuse.
Update
I’ve decided, after much internal debate, to add pull-ups to the Fit Hembree workouts. They will be included sporatically, but they will be included.
Pull-ups are a critical to developing functional fitness and must be included in any training regimen. You will need to get a pull-up bar of some sort, or grab a near-by tree limb or pipe or something. Check the links bar for vendors of various pull-up bars. I will get no proceeds from the sales.
Hembree…?
